Is an fx5 on a 55g overkill?

One hob emperor 400 would be fine. You've got filtration for a 220 there.

I just moved one of my FX5's off of a 55 and the fish werent affected by the current. I also had one of those sunsun filters running on the 55 at the same time.

I don't think so. lol

You're gonna need AT LEAST a 200 gallon sump on there or you're gonna be underfiltered. Just saying.
