The surprising thing about the nitrAtes is I test for them, and they are always <5. I know that plants prefer ammonia over nitrAtes for fertilizer, but I just don't see how my nitrAtes can stay so low all the time. Right now I have a Fluval 405 and AC70 running on the tank. Over-filtered I know, but the water stays very clean.
Also, Fancy goldfish are very different than their common goldfish cousins. They do not get very big comparatively. If I had common goldfish, I would only venture to keep 2 in a 55 gallon, and even then it's pushing it, because they are so long, and the 55gallon tanks are so narrow. I'm somewhat of a goldfish snob, I love their little wiggles
