Is an Under gravel filter a good idea?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oddball - I wish I had read this post a month ago... I just set up my 90 gallon with a reverse ugf. I never thought of adding the bonded filter media to the top of the plate, that is brilliant. I almost want to tear it down to add it now... but as wet as I got setting it up, I probably wont.

UG filtration works well if the water is circulated through the gravel up wards never suck through the gravel.

this way you turn the whole gravel bed in to a bio filter . your canister filters can now remove the solid wast.

much easier to clean

I think undergravels are a pain, I use AC filters, or I recommend canisters.

UGF's are a great source of biological filtration. Very dependable. However, I often recommend combining them with a HOB or Canister filter for mechanical filtration.
