Is anyone keeping Beani(s)?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just picked up a couple of F1 white Beani (1-1", 1-1.5") from a guy on Craigslist in the SF Bay Area. Nice guy named Dan.

I have previous experience killing Beani (both white and brown varieties) via bloat but am determined to keep these 2 alive. I know they are tough to keep since there are a couple of reputable shops locally that I know lost entire batches of juvies...

From reading these forums and other online sources, I'm going to try a varied diet, slightly elevated temperatures (80F) and epsom salt. I've seen espom salt quotes at 1 Tblspn/10 gallons, but since these guys are new and seem to be eating and pooping (fingers crossed), I'm just going to try 1 Tblspn/20 gallons.

Right now they are mixed in with a couple of timid but territorial RTM and 1 - 1"umbee, 1-1"Haitensis and 1- 1.5" dovii. I know this will not work long term, but I will try to keep them until I see signs of trouble...I would guess around 3-4". I seem to have a knack for preventing bloodshed and hope this holds true this time as well. The larger Beani seems to follow the dovii around. They aren't fighting but the beani seems to be shadowing him/her (too small to sex) as harrassment. When the dovii turns around and flares up, the beani just backs off...then resumes to follow the dovii again. One thing I will say, these fish are FAST...When the other fish nip at the beani, the beani seem to teleport a safe distance away...they are that fast. I'm scared how nasty they may become when they get size and their tempers increase.

I just love some of the white/black honeycombed pics I've seen online and hope mine make it there.

Any other specific advise anyone could give me would also be appreciated.

Thanks all,

Pics of both Beani with some tank mates. I think these are the white ones no? They are whiter than the pics indicate...but beani are relatively new to me.

I have a 9" male in a 10' tank with 3 females and he pretty much ignores them. They are however rough on each other. .

LOL - "Aggressively ignores..."

I appreciate the input. Thank you all. I will continue to research and learn before purchase of any fish. Maybe breeding will be further away than anticipated but nevertheless I may venture toward it..
Keep it coming

Cichlidholic...i got some from him also shipped along with 2 festae. the beani that i got from him killed the other beani in the bag. yesterday the beani killed my bigger festae didnt just kill him but ate out the guts

South15,

Sorry to hear about the carnage. Festae are awefully pricey and beani are just hard to find.

Good luck raising your beani and festae. I love both for their aggression...Sparring is ok, carnage is bad.

The bigger of the two he sold me he called "evil". Since I posted (couple hours ago), he seems to have climbed the pecking order a bit and is starting to punk the larger (and encumbent) dovii and male motaguense. Only one left is the larger female motaguense and he doesn't seem *too* scared of her. He has been in the tank less than 2 days....

There is a lot of space in the tank for such small fish, so I hope they can get along for a while.

Good luck South15 and all with beani. Here's to keeping the bloat away !

There is definitely a market for them. Alot of people have interest in them after a brief hiatus.
