Is bamboo good for a sump?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
any plant is fine for a sump...ESPECIALLY fast growers. Just rememeber if it isnt truley aquatic (like your bamboo) it cant be completely submerged.

Lucky Bamboo is extremely slow growing. You probably wont see it grow at all even after a few years. The leaves/shoot things will grow but not the stalk. Also, Lucky bamboo (the kind that isn't $80 for a 5-gallon pot. The kind thats all twisted and what not) is not actually bamboo, but a member of the lily family. True Bamboo cannot survive in water like Lucky Bamboo/Pothos/etc..

You probably have lucky bamboo, as long as the leaves aren't submerged then it should thrive in your sump. I have not tried it myself, but have heard from other people that it works really well for reducing nitrates. I also believe that it needs less light than pothos does to survive.

hornwort is really fast grower and it actually adds oxygen to your water. or if you wana get crazy, duckweed, that stuff grows like crazy and you'll never be able to get rid of it lol.

SO this is the lucky Bamboo i picked up. My LFS was selling it for 10 bucks a peice. I found these in a run down craft shop. They were only 3 bucks. So im ordering 20 which are coming soon.

These are great tall peices. They are almost touching the light that is mounted under the tank. I need to cut them down but i dont know how much to cut off.

How much can i cut off? only leaves? all the leaves? will cut stems regrow?

Do i need substrate? I dont want to use any if i dont have to.
