Is brackish water killing my filters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Probably just sand caught in there. Blast some water into the impeller section & clean the impeller well.

Hi
dont know these filters but if they are HOB could you not hang a piece of sponge under the output as a temp fix

that wont fix it but it will prevent future problems with sand clogging the filters

It sounds like putting a sponge on the OUTPUT will help diffuse the water and prevent the sand from blowing all over the place, which is what I think this person means.

I put a sponge on my intakes to prevent sand from instantly destroying my filters, but the fine dust particles still get in there and do a nice job of grinding down the metal stem in my AC500/ 110.

In your case you definately don't want sand blowing all over the place, so find some way to diffuse or direct the water flow.

I have sand in my 85 gallon with 2 marineland 280's and a 400. I bought a sponge that goes on a power head that is about 6" tall and about 3" wide with a 1" hole going threw it. I took off the square part off the end of the intake and zip tied one end of the sponge and stuck it on the intake and zip tied it to that. I have no problems and I get a 10 times turn over:D.

i have two AC70's on my 75. i love these filters, i do have the same issue. all you have to do is break down the filter, take the motor off and blast some water in the motor, take the impellor out, wipe it down really good, make sure to get inside the motor where the impellor goes in. get q-tips wet them and swirl them around the prong you put the impellor on. i have had only 1 go bad on me in the past year and that was only because when i was taking the filter off my tank the plastic housing cracked right by where the water comes out. i have never lost an AC filter because of my sand.

you could also get a higher grade sand that way it wont get kicked up as easily

I have been running into the same problem with my AC50. I have been having to tear it all down and clean it every couple days ever since I switched to salt. I really like the setup of the aqua clears, but this whole maintenance thing is really getting annoying. So does the sponge over the intake thing actually fix the problem? It seems as if it would only delay it, because the finer particles would still work their way though.

Would it be possible for a mod to move this thread to Marine Products and DIY? I think that it would get more of the right kind of attention there.

You have to contact a Mod. They don't read every single thread.
