Is carbon really necessary?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you will find most of us dont use carbon. the space taken up by carbon is much more useful being taken up by bio-media

carbon is a great thing, however once its used up, it can start leeching the garbage back into your tank that its there to take out in the first place. so your better off just saving money and not using it, and just doing a WC every week.

that said, if you ever use any meds for ich or anything, run carbon for a week or so once the treatment is done, as it will remove the meds from the water.

very useful info everybody :)
I'm glad I don't have to waste my money on carbon anymore!!!!

dang...The carbon in my fx5 is like a good 6 months old. NOt doing a thing eh. Guess I'll go get some more bio media in the next few days.

As posted above it does depend on what you are trying to achieve, day to day use maybe, but not neccesary.

all ive been using in my emp400s is carbon and ammo chips. been keeping for a year.
eek.

The only time I use carbon is Christmas time.

All the fishes have their own tiny stockings hanging below their tanks. And the bad fishes get their socks filled with carbon.
It's how I keep the aggression down in my tanks. Because they know, if they are bad, santa will fill their stocking with coal.
