Is changing to sand worth it?

I'm going with black tahitian moon sand in my 20 long that I am putting together.

That along with a flat black painted background and some yellow labs in it should look quite nice in my bedroom. (well at least I'm hoping)

Yup I did the same on my kids 10 gallon. But I went black on black with blue neon (not yellow). Tank looks spooky. The kids love it at night. It's like a freaking glow light to put them to bed...lol
:D

I'm debating wether to go with black, white or natural sand for my Asian tank. It's going to be set up like a stream with lots of flow with some rasboras, a red tailed shark and some loaches but with the red tail I'm not sure if white sand would wash out his colours but I'm thinking if would look like a zen garden with black river rocks for décor. I could also do the opposite with black sand and white rocks to maybe keep some colour to the shark. Any one have any recommendations?

I just found out that my employer reps 3M so I have access to all the sand and can pretty much have it for free. Woohoo!

I went trail riding this weekend and came back with some big chunks of drift wood and about 100 pounds worth of rocks. The wood is too big to boil, so I'm just leaving it in a dark trash can. I figure with Arizona's 100 degree days and a dark can, the water should get fairly warm. I'll leave it in there for awhile, and change the water daily.

When the wood is ready, out comes the gravel and in goes black sand. The tank is going to look outstanding!

I would of never considered going with sand for a tank myself before buying a tank from a guy on Craigslist that already had sand in it. So far I've been happy with it, and the fish all seem to like it too.

I just switched to sand in my 55g for my fire eel and clown knife. So I'd say it's worth it for the type of fish it's for. Just wanted to add that Lapis Lustre #12 sand is really good stuff in case you can't find pool filter sand like in my case and it's $14. for 50lbs.

congrats on going and doing it! looks lovely!

I'm in the process of thinking of changing the sand I have... but the work just seems immense!
