Hello,
As the title states, does clove oil have dangerous long term effects on fish? I’ve been reading more about puffer teeth clipping and this seems to be a recurring theme. Seems to be that is caused neurological damage due to oxygen deprivation. Is this all wildly overblown or do I risk killing my puffers prematurely with clove oil?
MS-222 isn’t exactly easy (or cheap) to come by, and I definitely don’t trust myself to clip teeth without anesthesia.
Are there other fish anesthetics out there?

Not sure of the long term effect of clove oil itself but if not monitored then probs will occur. Always a risk using clove oil for sedation. It does what it does…if too long then O2 deprivation and neurological probs. Can happen with people if not monitored. Happened with Michael Jackson.

So I guess the quicker I clip the teeth the better/least likely to cause harm? And of course wear a masks and gloves for myself…learned that one from my zoas…

Quicker and back into clean water asap.

I use clove oil extensively. Light doses which knock fish out slowly make recovery time slower. Doses which knock fish out quickly make recovery quick too. This is the opposite of MS-222 whose ingredients dont flush out readily and which has been banned in recent years.

The dissolved clove oil has micro goblets that accumulate and clog the gill filaments to starve oxygen so flushing these away with oxygenated water is needed for recovery.

If you add a little ethanol or methylated spirits to help the oil dissolve, a lower dose of oil can be used which is safer.

AQUI-S is a commercial product wiyh uniformly dissolved clove oil ingredient that is easier and more consistent to use.

Phenoxyethanol is another aesthetic fairly easy to administer.

Too deep sedation will kill the fish.
Water temperature will affect dissolved oxygen so be conscious of that.
You may be able to clip teeth without sedation or very light sedation. Just hold the fish firmly.

Thanks for the info! I’ll keep that in mind!

I use MS-222 for sedating eels, mainly to slow them down for easier handling. A fish vet told me that a heavier dose is better than a light dose as the subjects lose consciousness faster, and recover quicker. Add baking soda as 222 is acidic. If MS-222 is used for food fishes, they must not be consumed for at least a month after sedation. Guessing you aren't going to eat your puffer.
Regardless of what you use, work as quickly as you can.
