Hello everyone!
After keeping various fish for about 8 years now, including tarpons gars Arowana peacock bass various types of catfish and more, I have decided I want to buy my first ever rare and expensive catfish. I am going between 2 species:
1) The dorado catfish
2) a Tigrinus catfish
I should note that the dorado will be in a rubber lined pond, but anyway I am having much trouble deciding which one to get. Which one is better in your opinion ? I have found good sources for the tigrinus, but every source I have found on the dorado is “he injured his nose and died” and “he was kept with inappropriate tank mates and was eaten” and yet people still decide to keep them in open tanks with glass and aggressive tank mates. The only one I have found that is larger than 2 ft is tbtb’s, but even that was his 12th attempt, or $1200 that I don’t have. I have a 40 gallongbgrowout lined in soft foam (aquarium safe) to protect his nose. If you can’t tell already I am leaning toward getting the dorado very much. Anyway after he is about 7 inches he will go in a larger pond about 500g with 1 peacock bass, 2 Indo pacific tarpons and koi, I have never seen aggression from any of these fish, so hopefully he will be able to happily grow out to 2 ft in that pond and then we will see if he can reach 6ft like they do in the wild without killing his nose!

Howzit man,
going to be straight up, I don't think you should get the dorado. Tigrinus are prettier, less risk and should be able to live in your 500 gal for life. A dorado? ask viktor about his in his 25,000 gallon. They are the marathon migration champions of the freshwater world. Really, no one should have them except the biggest of aquariums or if you're like Viktor or Rodrigo at PF and have the provisions. Its a good idea to have safeties in place to not hurt it's nose, but i just think it would still find a wau to injure itself. I had a 1000 gallon pond and was building an even larger pond and I couldn't work up the courage from a moral standpoint and also just the money it would take the powerheads all the oxygen those guys need.
Long story short man, if I am you, scoop yourself up a Tig.

Yeah, that’s what I was afraid of, it’s the space that they really need. If you think about it, to live a natural life they need 3500 miles of space, so it makes sense why they don’t do well in captivity. I understand what your talking about with viktor and his 25k, it seemed so much happier doing its laps there, and i will keep that in mind. It shouldn’t be a problem during the summer months when it will be in a koi pond that I am mapping out to be 10x25 ft, but he would have to be cramped in an 8ft round tank in the winter to stay warm. His quarantine tank is lined with soft foam and has 440 gph pump that should help him out a lot, I am think about it, I have been researching and experimenting with other skittish fish to try and find the best chance possible for months now. I think if the dorado was only$50 I might try it but since it’s almost $200 I’m not sure it’s worth it. I just love that metallic shine😍

I do think I will get the tig instead, I just dont want to end up in an endless loop of dead and injured dorados, especially with the price
