ive had my florida gar since July 12 and hes grown from 1in to 2 1/2in, is that good???

if ur wondering why im asking
i was told that he should be 7in in 2 months, and since im not an "expert" i must be wrong about everything right???

so my gar should be about 4in now rite??? cuz an "expert" told me the above

yeah i think the growth was a little slow cause in my experience with my gars they grow fastest when small and slows down after a year or so.

and just an advice dont try to point out somebody with your statements cause a lot of people would react and then the outcome wont be good.:D

we have had our juvi Osseus since early summer. he was an inch and a half when we got him and is now 6-7". his pectoral fins are growing nicely and still has a good bit of his unistyle(i think this is the correct term) left to absorb.

Same fish first pic 6-10-08.... second 8-5-08

Sorry if you feel so upset about having someone whom actually researches and professionally studies these fish answer your questions and not give you the answers you want to hear...

Internet sucks like that doesn't it.... Just can't keep those with experience and a hell of a lot of knowledge about the subject away...

nice spotted richard. and you do have a point.

and just to reiterate the original statements about the growth of the gar...yes, it's abnormally slow, and yes, the fish should be much larger than it is right now. ...and no, the "quotes" around expert are not needed in your original post--

i was told gar grow an inch a month
mine grew 1 1/2in from july 12 to august 12

is that slow??? its a florida gar, how is that slow??

whata they do??, go on hyper speed the first most then suddenly slow down??
they only get 12in their first year, that doesnt make any sense

i can understand an alligator gar, but a florida gar that my only grow 18-24in?? that fast the first month.... please......

and yes i put the quotes around expert, cuz he told me my florida gar should be 7in in 2months, HA!! i dont believe that

I do not know why I'm bothering but here it is anyhow..

First off I said your fish should be 5 to 7 inches. Growth on these fish depends on many factors

First off I said your fish should be 5 to 7 inches.

You also need to understand what a growing season is for these fish... It is at most five months. in that span of time they grow very fast. it is not uncommon at all for a Florida, spotted, longnosed or shortnosed to reach 10 to 12 inches in one growing season of five months. A year is actually not 12 months when you are discussing these fish you are looking at growth periods and stages.

Leeway is generally given towards the smaller side for Captive raised fish as their growth is always skewed to a smaller size. Your fish are way under even this minimum.. This is known information and not my "opinion" this is empirical researched documented information.

If you would have contrary info though please inform my ignorant self on why the several years of data I have (and many others have published) on all four lepisosteus species suggests this growth rate is wrong..

Please give me your information that is contrary to mine and contradictory to other published and peer reviewed information that is available.

I'd just love to hear this and how you came to these results with your two months of "experience"...
