I have taken a worm from my back yard and cut it up into small pieces. I dropped them into my freshwater tank and watched some non aggressive fish eat it. They went nuts for it and devoured it quickly.

Is this okay to do?
Will it harm my fish?

:headbang2

sorry i just think that smiley is awesome....

some worms might of have been exposed to chemicals...like weed killers, bug sprays, ect. so i wouldn't.

best worm is from LFS or walmart or bait store..dont get it from your yard. worm are not expensive so it worth to buy and feed them to your fish.

Ok,
How’s it going…? I too wondered about that. I started by going to my local gardening center and buying a container of earthworms. Then after the season was over I turned to mini nightcrawlers. I feed them to my Bala shark and EBJD. I would be concerned about the worms around your house if you use any pesticides or chemicals. I just go to my local bait and tackle store and buy my worms there.
After I take a couple out of the refrigerator, I quickly run it under hot water from my sink. Pretty much turns them limp. After that I will lay them on a paper towel then pre-poop them. Ha... this is done my wetting my finger and running the tip of my finger from head to end of the worm. This just squeezes all the junk out of the worm. Then I hand feed my fish.

Don

when i find them i put them in a big plastic box filled with soil and then take them out whenever i want to feed them to my fish and ive had no problems so far.

Do you have to pre poop them? Also what is the resoning behind doing that? Just less mess in the tank?
It will also help to remove some of the harmful chemicals they may have been exposed to.

Also, I have heard to be careful about feeding bait worms to captive fish. Some have been exposed to certain hormones that may harm captive fish

I used to buy worm's from a bait shop but they cost about £14 and i'm to tight to pay that so i made myself a big compost heap (keen gardener aswell) i just turn it over once a fortnight and get my worm's there or go out in the rain on local field's to pick up big boy's.Although i'm not sure what people think i'm doing out there in the dark and rain :nilly:
