Dr. Bryan Greg Fry did the research. if you do a google search, you will find his paper on it.

a.gigas told me that they eat the meat from where the adults were eating and they get the bacteria that way so if it was raised from an egg without the other komodo's saliva on their food they would not have the bacteria

Also in response to bacteria, there are a dozen types that live in our mouths that can be deadly. It is Venom that does the killing. These are some of the more venomous monitor lizards but all Varanids have been found to have rudimentary venom glands and a delivery system.
As an addition to this, their venom increases bleeding, causes blood vessels to become "leaky" causing internal bleeding and ultimately results in vascular collapse and unconsciousness/death.

And yes, if your country is in CITES then you cannot dream of legally owning one outside of an institution (Zoo).

heh, there are some in private hands atm. not legally, but we wil see how it turns out. should be interesting

and reGARding CITES, once its in the country CITES doesnt apply.

In Europe as well in other places there are private keepers with komodos. The main obstacle to get one of these is not Cites regulations as there are plenty of cb ones but the individual country legislation. Here in Europe at least, people with them have relationships wth zoos and as such cannot qualify as an average keeper but they are privatly kept none the less. For example most of the cb komodos in Europe come from a breeder in he Canary Islands.
