I would like to feed nls flake but my filter sucks up a lot of it when I add the food. If i turn off the filter by unplugging it each time i feed is this bad for the filter? fx6 is what i run.

Other options? I just don't want it to suck up the food and don't want to be a PITA to deal with daily..

First ...never shut off filters, always keep them running all the time.

FX5 and FX6 it automatic shut off and purge by itself every 24hrs.

If you having problem with sucking up food, move the inlet up more..or cut a mess bag and wrap around the inlet so it wont suck up all the food.

you shouldn't need to shut off a filter to feed. I doubt it would be a massive issue but could cause extra wear on the parts being turned on and off so frequently.

I can't speak for FXs, but I always turn my cheapo canisters(Sunsun and Odyssea) off every feeding and maintenance. Been doing this for years without issue...and I'm running 8 different units as of right now

good to know thanks for the input. I obviously don't want to ruin my expensive filter which is why i am asking before I start doing it.

I can't imagine turning down the flow on both in and outl would have a negative impact on the filter unit. But i don't know for certain.

that moreso than turning it off every day I would think. considering you are restricting the input and output the pump motor would be working doubly hard.

Why is it bad to turn them off? I mean we do it during filter maintenance.

Assuming you should have more then 1 filter running in your tank correct?

when I have 4 FX6 running in my 300g including Sump. When I do maintenance on my FX6 i dont shut off every single filters. I clean 2 at a times and keep the other 2 running.

Simple fact never shut off any filter ..if you have 2 running shut off 1 is OK but leave one running.
