Most LFS aren't very knowledgeable. I spoke with the owner of one of mine asking about plecos and he had no idea. He said ,"My clientele are mainly beginners". I said I figured that by the stock he had but you'd think he'd be more interested in the lifetime keepers......more money there. Tons of beginners quit.

And to answer your question, this is why you should go to more than one LFS. Eventually you'll learn which ones to go to for fish and which ones you go to for supplies and which ones you go to only in desperate emergencies.
