Is it better to start cycling my tank with or without a fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
not a good idea to use feeder goldfish, i've seen them dozens of times have some rather nasty parasites and bacterial infections that could easily get transfered over to your grouper. you should just pretend that you've got fish in there and feed the tank everyday and the decomposing food will provide plenty of ammonia.

Wow, didnt know I can do that. So just throw a lil bit of flakes in the tank every other day??

Also, with the small amount of media that I have had already filtered, my tank has the possibility of being cycled in about a week????????????

ya once the bacteria has started it grows fast, instead of feeders try mollies or a bunch of tetras...

I flooded my 135 gallon with 30 1" feeders and they all survived during the cycling period until my piranhas were added in - they vanished 3 days later. So, it helps to add fish during the cycle period.

I was thinking of buying a bacteria packet (suppos it jump starts the process...). What do you think? I prob dont need it since I got the bacteria growing already:D

So maybe Ill just throw in a few feeders that I have in a Quarentine tank (might just be like 3 1" goldfish:D)

Thanks for all the help. Just ganna keep checking my Params for the next week or so:headbang2

that packet you are talking about must be refrigerated at the store and until you use it... a lot of stores dont refrigerate it so it is a waste of money.

are u kidding us? I cant believe these posts even exist anymore. If you use "BIO SPORA" and u have ANY problems or lose a fish I will buy u a new fish tank my friends. The folks at Marineland labs have done all of our homework. Dont let anyone tell you any different,The stuff works just as stated and if you hear differently then that person has either NEVER USED IT or they work for the competition. Forget "cycle" cause that is just crap that supplies the bacteria that will have to build up in your water over time so that the bb will START to establish. With"BIO SPORA" you WILL wake up the next day with an established bio colony cause that is what it contains.... It is refrigerated because just as in our aquariums where temperature is key the cold water keeps the bacteria dormant or asleep and untill the temp rises these bacteria are dormant just as what accurs every year when temp drops in the natural environment, Don't take my words for granted , damn, just look it up online I'm not talking shi# this is fact so if you dont look this up you are keeping yourself ignorant to the truest form of the word and you will just not know the facts of the matter. This crap has been out for YEARS and I cant believe that people are still cycling their tanks the old way. OK, I'm done ranting but if people are still posting with cycling questions then I would have to say you are just wasting your time.

Ya that is the name I forgot, "Bio Spira" is the proper spelling, again it must be kept in the fridge or the bacteria will be dead...
