Hi all, I noticed some white spots developing on the tail and fins of my Uarus about three days ago. They seem to meet the description of Ich, I'm not really sure though. The Uarus are both feeding extremely well, and are as active as usual. I have had these Uarus for about 3 weeks now, the shop I bought them from said he had them for 5 months. They looked a little beat beaten up in the shops tank, but nothing to worry about. They are in a 150g (5x2x2) with a 7cm Giant Gourami, a 15cm Senegal Bichir, a 12cm Gibbiceps, a a 12cm Black ghost Knife and 10 Scissortail Rasboras. Non of these fish are showing any signs of white spots. Does this sound like Ich, and how should I go about treating it?

Pics? You can do salt and heat...or you can get some "rid ich"....

Sounds like Ich. It often shows on some fish and not others in early stages. I would not take a gamble with you fish. I would start treatment.

Raise your temp. to 84 degrees and add 4 table spoons of aquarium salt for every 5 gallons of water. Do this slowly over at least a 24 hour period, and make sure you disolve the salt before you add it to the water.

Oh yeah- if you post pics of your Uaru, we can probably tell you for sure if they have it.

Good luck!

Will the heat and salt thing work on its own, or would I still have to add Ich medicine? The temperature now is 26 degrees celsius (78.8 farenheit), so should I raise it to 28 degrees celsius (82 farenheit)? Will this temeprature affect any of the other fish? I have a large Anubias growing on a piece of driftwood, will adding salt affect it?

I am not sure of potential negative effects on some of your fish or your plant.

Just salt and raised temp. is all you need. I have raised my tanks temp from 78 to 84 while treating ich. Every time I have treated for this, my suggestion has worked like a charm.

I would do one or the other...Never both...If the salt and heat, fails..Have the meds as back up...

Cheers for the quick responses everyone. I have aquarium salt, it says the dosage is 1 teaspoon per 10 litres of water. Is this correct? Do I dose the tank all at once, i.e. its a 500l tank so add 50 teaspoons of dissolved salt at once, or add it over a period of time? Same goes with the temperature, do I raise it to 29 degrees or whatever straight away, or raise it a bit at a time?

Do I continue doing water changes every week, or should I do it more / less frequently during the treatment period? How long should I treat for? Does anyone know whether the salt and increased temperature will affect the GG or the Bichir?
