Is it illegal to collect Alligator gars here?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It says anglers can take 2 per day and this is usually done with a bowfishing arrow. I think one would be happier in a MFK members tank than dead with an arrow in it.

I travel over the Bay to get to the eastern shore. The Mobile Bay delta has water lotus, nutria, alligators and these alligator gars. The article says the state record was from the Tensaw delta. Looks like a gar collecting trip needs to be planned.

And a whole hell of alot of luck.....Alligator gar have been pretty much been eliminated in Illinois and they where never common anyhow. I personally find it interesting the Illinois stand on Ironcolor shiners when another equally rare fish can be collected without question on a fishing license alone. Different story here though..and someting for a different rant.

As far as I can figure.....Where you are at.... collection is equally permited under a regular fishing licence with a maximium possession of two fish per day as stated above. Not much more to it than that really.

Across the line, in MS, gars are legal to catch and keep by conventional methods (hook). You can't use a seine but, you can use a casting net. And, you can't keep live game fish (stupid rule). Gars are not considered game fish.

i agree...would take a TON of luck to catch a gator gar out there, but more power to you! i think there are some other species out there that are worth looking into though...don't you think richard? :) --

Ok, thanks for all your replies. I need to just work on getting a little flat bottom boat that I can throw in my truck, take the cooler, 12 volt pump and cast net on a nice day and see what is swimming around.
