They are also in Central Texas. Not sure on the legalities...but would like to know as well.
Hard to catch on a hook due to their hard mouth areas...but some have had luck catching them on lures using frayed nylon rope. The rope is frayed then burned at the end and cinched. The gar bites on it and the nylon rope entangles in the teeth. Their reaction is to bite down harder. Then you horse em' in. I would love to grab one for my 240 tank!!!
