We're lucky up here that the fish stores are constantly competing and keep trying to up the quality. Spencer's been ruling though and has been bringing in some stellar fish! Beani, bartoni, wild oscars, wild festae, etc etc etc.

Oooooo... That sounds tempting. Once I get a couple of stands built I've got a 135 that I plan on devoting to some festae. I wonder what issues would be involved bringing them back 'cross the border? I've been up to Winnipeg a couple of time through work. I wouldn't be above a road trip for the right reasons. LOL What's 700 miles one way amongst friends! I guess we'll have to see what the spring brings...

I'd suggest ordering from a reputable online source. There are plenty of reputable vendors on here you could look into.

I agree, you may end up spending 40 or 50 dollars on shipping cost, for a hand full of 5 to 10 dollar fish.
However, when they grow out, you'll know why you spent it.
I've done this a couple of times, it's worth it.(to me anyways)

I seem to be finding the same trouble as the O.P. when looking for jack dempseys, or firemouths.
Just down rite crappy, local stock...

I hear ya on keeping these fish true. I like Oscars, been keeping them for decades. The simple fact is they're the most common cichlid on the market. Always have been. They'll eat anything, live in any tank and are close to impossible to kill. Because of this alot of hobbyist bring their adult Oscars back to the LFS when they lose interest and alot of these fish are raised in tanks with high ammonia and low oxygen levels. These fish are fed poorly and what you got are weird looking grown Oscars in the shops. If you want some quality fish you can wait for a miracle (which sometimes happen) or get some young ones and raise them yourself. If you take good care of these fish they will blossom. Good luck Monsta.
