bellevue, ne
i am going build or buy a new tank soon and the current dimensions put the tank at about 550. i will be keeping (growing out now) at least one clown knife, an ornate bichir, Midas cichlid, 2 red belly pacu, and a silver arrow.

i may have room for a bigger tank (depends on what house i get) but will that be big enough for that list. ( i know the mfk answer is go as big as you can)

ps why isnt pacu in our spell checker?

There are tons of people that will tell you this is fine, but I don't believe in growouts for fish. It's way too easy to let them go to the wayside.

^ ditto...

and I tried to keep Pacu in a 300 gallon 6' round rubbermaid. But when they hit 2' (in less than a year and a half) their skittish nature made them constantly slam into the (plastic) walls so hard I knew they were going to harm themselves...

As long as the LxWxH is relativly close to a standard 600 8x4x30" you should be fine. And that doesn't take up that much room. The only problem with the big DIY tanks is if you're not ready to pay for the filtration that sucks. Build a 600 for a few hundered bucks then find out it's like a grand to do the filters and heaters the way you want. So plan well when you build this thing and 550 gal should do fine. Just make sure it's got a nice tight lid or the aro will get out trust me I had to learn the hard way. (check my old threads I had a 30" silver jump)

Size should be fine but if you already have the pacu your time is limited to get the project done.

I think it should be fine.

What are the Dimensions of this planned tank ?
