Hello; If ammonia and nitrite are present then the tank is not cycled. It may have been cycled in the past but the addition of a new fairly large fish may have put the tank into a mini-cycle.
The new fish adds a larger amount of ammonia and it can take a while for the slow to reproduce beneficial bacteria (bb) to increase their population.
