Is it possible for acrylic tanks to have open top?

A SW LFS near my house (Saltwater Fantaseas) has a large cube tank that easy 5' x 5' x 2' tall that is open in the middle. Has a strip around all top on all sides that is about 6" wide and the tank is all 1" acrylic all around. AWESOME looking tank. Wish I could have one for rays. I hear their not jumpers....

Yeah, Euro bracing is probably the way to go. You could make a rimless tank, but it would require much thicker material.

Anyone got pics of Euro bracing? Thanks

Glasscages' larger tanks are Eurobraced, but also have cross braces. Go to this page: http://www.glasscages.com/?sAction=ViewCat&lCatID=2 and click on the "pictures" button next to any of the larger tanks. I'm not sure if the cross braces here are necessary for strength or are just to help support canopies, lights, etc.
