Is it possible to breed gars?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
not sure if it helps. but when i was in tennesee, i saw gars (which i thought were breeding) they were shallower water around 1.5 to 1 foot. groups of atleast 5 or more would swim past. usually smaller following a monster one (the female i think?) they were amongst taller grasses and lots of vegetation. the water was around 65 degrees and it was mid april. i couldnt see any beds or anything, but they would swim together so tight and stop. they would swim over each other and send water flying.

attached is a pic with me and the one i caught, you can see the "marshy" area they were in. lemme know if i can help in any other way. The lakes contained shortnose, spotted, allis, and longnose. but im sure these were spotted, similar to floridas right?

 Dude it's cool to love your fish, but not like that.
You would have to have a BIG tank if you are going to get in it and try to breed with your fish. Also, my Gar have just got used to getting petted so don't be suprised if they are scared a little the first time. Just like me back in jr. high when it was my first time.
You might want to start out slow, maybe buy it a drink and see where it goes from there. Remember, just cause you are really interested in them doesn't mean they feel the same way about you.

Thanks alot! It seems that in their native habitat they are always around tall plants with alot of vegetation. I'm buying some pool filter sand and already bought 3 bags of Flourite to plant some nice long plants in the 125. Thanks again.

no problem guys. if u need anything or have any questions i could probably answer, im sure i left stuff out shoot me a pm.

i would of loved to kept one but i have no where for it. i couldnt find any small enough that i could even keep for awhile.

That and its a painful 15 hour drive from northwest tennesee to north eastern maryland.
