Is it possible to handfeed centipede??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i'm not trying to bust balls, but let us know what the sting feels like w/ pics please. i was always pretty curious.

I have not handled them but I have handle a tarantula species that everyone stirs clear of, that being said, its a risk we took for our own personal reasons, not a macho thing and not really a show off thing, more of a human to nature contact zen thing in the lamest hippie terms I can think of.

Now, anyone reading this thread, because this guy is going to try this some day, please dont think its something that will make you cool or tough to your friends. A hospital visit if you have an allergic reaction will be costly and a waste of time for the docs who need to be ready for people who couldnt help showing up. Also anyone who cares about you will worry and its not fair to them. It may be a nature thing or spiritual or whatever to do it, just remember their are many ways to feel that way with your animals rather than hand feeding them, please be safe and dont let other kids getting into the hobby think its tough or cool to try things like that, one wrong kid and just the right insect or other and you could put a life in real danger along with making the hobby look bad.

Good luck with your goal bud, be safe, try with gloves first or something, just dont do it for us, its all you. Remember most people who keep venomous species feed with tongs and such for a reason. Take care.

Just as a side note to what jason longboard has mentioned, let me share a real life experience with you which happened to a U.S. Marine infantry soldier who was with me in Vietnam.

We were about 4 clicks from the DMZ, on patrol searching for an assasination squad of Vietnamese soldiers. During this patrol search, we stopped for a 5 minute rest. When we stopped, a centipede fell from a tree branch, attacked this Marine and was stung 3 times on the left cheek of his face. The venom from these stings caused his entire face to swell. The area surrounding each of the 3 stings turned black immediately, indicating dead and damaged tissue to his face. Each of the stung areas which turned black was the size of a 25 cent piece. I called for an immediate medivac to get us behind friendly lines and to a field hospital. We were 10 minutes out by helicopter from our friendly lines, where he would recieve immediate medical attention....I got him back to the field hospital, taking the centipede along with him. I put the centipede in a closed container where the field hospital could make an antidote for his bites. Unfortunately, by the time he made it back to the field hospital, the venom from the 3 bites, spread to his nervous system in the spine of his neck. He had no response to any treatment. It was a great personal loss to me as this Marine was my Spotter and "A"-gunner. We had been together in country for 10 months. It was a real nightmare and PITA, writing a letter to his parents explaining what had happened and how their son had died.

So, ruckasiawesome, if you feel you have gonads made of something impervious to copius amounts of excrutiating pain and agony caused by a sting from a Vietnamese centipede and the burning injection of venom, go ahead, pick up that little tic-turd and try to hand feed him. But, if you get bit and can not make it to a hospital for treatment before you go into a traumatic state of shock and then into an unconsious coma .... you can not say you have not been forwarned. Beware, these centipedes are not user friendly.

I'm just going to post here so I can say, "I told you so" when you're typing with one hand.

Wow. If you try it your not very smart. This really shows the danger of what your dealing with. Its just not safe.

I don't get it. The OP asks if it's possible, then everyone tells him not to do it, then he says hes doing it anyway. If that's the case, why ask?

And yes, WHEN you get stung by it, post pics if you make it.

"Hey guys, is it possible to punch a lion right in the face then roll him over and pet his belly" says OP. First replay says "well gee, that does not sound like too smart of a plan but it is possible". OP says "Sweet don't care what yah say Ima do it! Wheres me a lion!".

This thread is about as dumb as my made up story.

Look man, if you are wanting to interact with your animals you should not have got a centipede. I have snakes that are less toxic than some centipedes and these snakes require strict permits. It would be like me hand feeding my eyelash vipers- even if I do it carefully it will eventually end up in a lot of pain and hospital bills. Don't think that because you were able to buy it without restrictions that it can be taken lightly. These are serious business and should be treated as such.

brockfishhawk, Great story. Simple, direct and to the point. But I must say, I doubt the OP wil understand it's meaning.
