Is it possible to have multiple breeding pair

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Multiple pairs can work out in large enough tanks but I would also be concerned about the possibilities of hybrids being created. Cross breeding could happen and you could be seriously messing up fish lines if you end up selling these fry and others start breeding them....

...so in order for this to occur:

1) Both of the breeding pairs in the tank would have to break up...and one fish from each pair would have to spawn with each other
2) The fishkeeper would have to not notice that this was going on
3) The fishkeeper would have to not notice that the fry were being guarded by a fish from each pair
4) The fishkeeper would have to not notice that the hybrid offspring don't look like either species...or at least a little odd
5) The fishkeeper would have to sell the hybrid offspring (or at least trade them to an LFS) under the wrong name (i.e. one species or another)
6) The LFS or buyers would have to accept the wrong name (i.e. not notice that the hybrid offspring don't look like either species...or question the provenance of the fish in question).
7) The LFS or buyer of the fish would have to include the questionable fish into a breeding project involving a pure line of fish, raise the fish to mature age, spawn them with a fish of known provenance and distribute the fry to others and not notice something fishy with one fish in the pair.

Likely? Not without total irresponsibility and/or stupidity all along the way.

 I know of breeders who take good care of their tanks and pay attention to their fish and would still not mix certain fishes in the tank because breeding pairs do not have to "break up" in order to have an issue. Because of the close proximity of multiple breeding pairs accidents could and do happen. Also many times people sell off fry before they clearly show the traits of a true adult so they easily could be sold as one type when they are a hybrid. I have a store by me selling Dempsey/Convict cross and depending on what the fish inherited you really cant tell much until they are about 2", the fry are usually sold off to the store at 3/4" when you really cant tell.

dogofwar, never had a full blown nuclear case of Murphy's Law hit your life?

anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. in addition to several things that could never ever happen.

Murphy's Law is one thing... stupidity, irresponsibility, fraud and dishonesty are another.

It's really a quite different situation for two different pairs of substrate-spawning cichlids to accidentally hybridize than for, say, accidental hybridization in a mixed tank of mbuna or Haps.

no offense intended. all I meant was, the world is full of people who inflict all those traits upon others.

My original question was not intended for breeding purposes. I mean breeding is likely with pairs and that is interesting and all but i just was wondering if cichlid pairs could coexist with others kind of like in the wild. I just like the idea of having a tank with a community of soulmates. Has anyone ever done something like this? Is it possible?

Entirely possible with a big enough tank. I would say, for the larger and more aggressive species, 500 gallons and up would be doable but you would need a crap ton of dither fish in the tank as well so the pairs don't just focus on each other.
