Is it possible to keep Altolamprologus in a 10gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
put sand in there, a rock barrier and excessive filtration and sumbu dwarf comps would work even if you missed a week occasionally. Where are you that you can't get shells? I'll mail you some!! Also a, for sure, pair of Caudopunctatus (look alot like mustax) would probably work cause the males max out around 2.5 inches. They always set up a territory about the size of a 10 gal anyway. They don't need shells though they seem to prefer them, they will also spawn under a flat rock or cave.

Also why not growout some .5 tp 1 inch Altolamps in there? It'll be 5 yrs. until they reach 4 inches in a tank that size anyway? And you can trade for more small ones and a few bucks once they are too big. when they start fighting trade them off. L. Stappersi is a shell dweller but has been found in river mouths where no shells are present. They just dive in the sand for cover. fish also don't know the difference between shells and pipe caps.

I personally have never kept altos in anything less than a 29g. A pair of shellie comps would work, however, I wouldn't keep any more than a pair in there though. Also, if your interested in some of the more active shellies, check out gold occies or some multies. I have some of each and they both keep me quite entertained.I do admit that the brevis are quite secretive, but it makes it that much better when they do come out. And given enough window time, they will become a bit more outgoing.

Gold Occies are colorful. Males have a nice yellow cast w/blue on the sides. a 10 gal. could work for Calvus/Comp. growout, but a lot of WC's will be needed w/a def. upgrade sooner than later.

I'm pretty sure that punks need more than a ten gallon. I have a trio that seem to enjoy swimming - something that a 10g would'nt allow much of. Shouldn't we strive to create the best possible environment for the animals/fish we keep. Not sure why one would want to cram larger fish into a smaller aquarium, just cause "it would work"

Plus, you'll be surprised what kind of behavior differences you will see when the fish are kept in the larger tank as opposed to the smaller.
