Is it possible to put up a 3D background on a already running tank?

I have a 360G, and I want to install a 3D back ground, but I'm trying not to shut down the entire tank. Any advice/help, or is it the only way?

I installed my 3D background to my already up and running 180 with very few problems.
First I moved the gravel away from the back area of the tank and then I carefully lowered the panel into the tank and maneuvered it behind my overflow box and flush against the back wall....once that is done I pushed the gravel up against the bottom edge of the panel and secured the top edge with plastic clips every few inches.
It may not be as perfect as siliconing the panel to a dry and empty tank but it has worked well so far.

Awesome. thanks. where did you get the background from (brand)? and any pics?

You're welcome and I don't have any good shots currently but I will get some for ya a little later after I come back from the gym.
I didn't mention that it's good to allow as little of the gravel to get behind the panel as possible as you want to get it as flush and snug to the glass as you can in order to keep debris from making it's way back between there and forming a nitrate chamber.
Mine is from Living Rocks but I bought it second hand from a fellow MFK member.

Depends on how buoyant the background is.
I had one of the thick malawi rock types, for a 6 ft 150 gal tanks, and It was very difficult to keep submerged, it kept popping up like a breaching whale. In the end I had to remove all water, and silicone it securely to the back, clamping it tightly to let it cure before it would hold.
And this is after I shaved a few inches of thickness from the back to get it flush.
