Is there any way to differentiate males and females just by looking at them? Any way to tell them apart? I think I may have accidently stumbled upon a male/female pair.

As far as I know, there isn't really a way to tell them apart. What makes you think you have a pair?

I've had my knife for almost 7 years. I have tried numerous times to add another. Always the same size. Everytime the LFS gets one in I take it home and attept to add it to my knifes tank. The results have never been good and rarely last more than a few hours. The last one was aquired when I bought an acrylic tank. I had intentions of taking it to a differnt LFS that I OKd a fish donation with. So I threw the knife and 2 cats in with my knife. This time was way different. Not only no aggression but contact. They sit side by side at all times and even brush up against eachother. Even take turns eating. This knife has always been a loaner so to speak. I've never been ablee to keep anything with it. I even moved it out of my pond due to it getting aggressive with the rays at feeding time. To see it "playing" with the other knife left me clueless....... I don't know what else would prompt this kind of behavior except them pairing up.

Did a bit of research and it looks like CKs have been bred in captivity before, but it's very difficult. They need a very large aquarium (most spawning I've heard of has always been in ponds), floating plants, flat rocks, and soft water. Males will protect the eggs and the eggs hatch in about a week.

Even though they may not breed for you, it looks like it's got a buddy now. Just keep an eye on it since your CK has a past of beating on new CKs. And I hope everything works out for you!

They have been together for 3 weeks now. I was seriously planning on taking them ALL (the 2 cats and BOTH knives) to the LFS but when I saw them getting along I immediatly decided they were staying. I will try to add them to an existing setup and if that doesn't work I'll attept to add them back in the pond with my rays....... Hopefully they will play nice... If not I don't know what I'm gonna do with them. Since I had been planning on just taking them to the LFS the tank they were put in was a small temporary tank. Guess I'll find out after this weekend. Thanks for your input Ben.

they're even getting along in a small tank? if they dont do well in your pond, pm me, im in iowa too and ill put them in my indoor with my midas and oscars. id be glad to come pick them up.

I will definetly do that cause if they don't jive they have to go. Small tank...LOL They are in a friggin 75. Guessing them both to be around 20-22 inches. Hey!! If you're into cats I just dropped off a 2 foot Marble pim and a footlong Lima shovelnose at the Ark in Ames.... Tried offering them up here in the classifieds but couldn't get anyone to come take them and my $4.... LOL They are both in VERY good shape for fish this size.

im not too much for cats, there cool but they just might not mesh well with everything else i have. i love that they get huge but id rather have 4 one foot long fish than one 4 foot long fish. the ck's i would love to have. im in wloo and i frequently go through ames. my wife has told me that i can only have free fish now. and not even any more free aquariums. damn her for putting limitations on my hobby, or in her terms obsession. I would love to check out your set up some time if that would be ok.

you try them in the pond yet? is the Ark a large lfs? do they have alot of exotics? we dont have much up here for anything dealing with large or exotic fish. sorry im done with this version of 20 questions.
