Well I was thinking of getting the Eheim Pro 3 2080 Canister Filter as it is finally at Big Al's Canada but it is really expensive $569.99 and it doesnt even come with media, the Media kit is another $180.

But if I buy the Filter on Wednesday I get double points which will bring me up to over 5000 points (in store), so then I could get the media kit for free pretty much...

I don't think it is really worth it though because I could really get 2 FX5's for that much and then I could have 3 FX's on my 220...

What would you do?

I have had ZERO problems with my FX5 and I am really happy with it.

Howdy,

I am a big Eheim fan, but the 2080 is NOT worth it for a tank larger than 75 gal. Simply search by threads started by me and 2080, and you will find out.

A much better deal would be the 2260 or better 2262. These are worth their money! And YES, these would be much better than the FX because of their huge biocapacity. Three FX will turn your tank into a whirlpool - only suitable if you want to keep trout or other fishes from creeks.

I cant get the 2200 series here yet, they just got the 2080 pro 3's not long ago...

Actually I remember they had the 2260 for a while but stopped carrying it...

so it looks like I am sticking with the FX5... only 2 though with 4 intakes...

You should ask them if they can get you a 2260 or 2262. The 2260 actually predates the 2080. Personally I'd add a 2028 or 2078 over an FX5 due to the large bio capacity.

and if you break something in the future with an eheim you alway's have spare part to get at the store , always eve if it is 15 years old

The 2028 is only good for up to 158gals.... and the 2078 is for up to 185 gallons. Also reading Harley's thread on the 2080 it is really only good for a 75gal so I can only assume that the lesser models are worse...

I am also not a fan of the single chamber canisters, and to pay the $600 + media isnt worth it to me... to be honest I can make almost the same filter out of a bucket and lid and a pump... I wouldnt mind paying the money for a pro 3 but nothing less then that...

The pro 3 is not lacking in media, but lacks in mechanical. The 2260 and 2262 are by far better filters then the 2080, and as far as biological goes, all three are better than the FX5. The 2080 can be used on much larger tanks than 75 gallons, and I for one run one as the primary filter on a heavy stocked 150. Your assumption of the 2028 is definitely wrong. These filters are work horses, and can do an amazing job filter for bio. No system really should be run on only one filter. Combining an FX5 with a 2028 or 2078 or 2217 would be enough to keep a very healthy system. Although a 2028 is only rated to 158 gallons, the key is running a system that will cover all of your basis. The FX5 will cover the mechanical far better than most eheims could, and the eheim will cover the biological far better than the FX5 can.
