i dont know abt the black substrate...the backing and white sand kinda gives it a natural look that would be marred by the un-natural looking black sand. i too would suggest more plants. but how about many short plants on different levels of driftwood. that'll give it a nice spacey feel

A nice piece of driftwood and some more plants would really dress it up. Nonetheless, I like the substrate and the existing rocks in it.
