Is it true that if you leave a goldfish in a dark room it turns white?

Is it true that if you leave a goldfish in a dark room it turns white?
If so... why?
 
White or faded colors? Fish can change their colors depending on their moods but I believe they meant the colors simply faded instead of the actual white color.

please dont try that, when they come out...IF they come out...they will be burned by light and be VERY sensitive

Please explain what do you mean by this post. If the room light were switched on first, it's not a problem.

Fish have control of some of their pigment cells especially the melanin (black cells) so they can lighten or darken based on the environment or social situation.

An orange goldfish in the dark is still orange as it has a gene that has killed all it's melanin cells when it decolored as a young fish.
