Is it wise??......

If you mean to try baby crickets, that would be fine. I would avoid stick/pellet foods until the gar is at least 4" and his rostrum has had some time to develop/strengthen.

I would wait for a while too, until it is comfortable in the tank.

To try and wean my 1 inch Gater Gar off of live feeders right now,or should i let him grow a bit more???:headbang2

Where did you get an inch long gator this time of year? are you sure about what the species is? Do you have a Pic of the fish?

To answer this though you are good with getting it onto a prepared diet now. Keep in mind the fish needs a good amount of food and should be fed well. Do not under feed the fish be it prepared or live foods. Prepared foods are fine for small gars (Atractosteus or lepisosteus) but feed frequently...

Phil I feed 1 inch longnosed pellets this is really not a major issue..

These fish will actually take prepared foods right off the yolk. Key thing to understand though is that they need a lot of food and need to be fed often. a young gar should never have an empty belly.

i generally feed live foods until the gar is several inches in length, and then switch to non-live, HOWEVER, i have discussed this in depth with polypterus, and his feeding method works very well too; so i think its a matter of personal preference and what works best for you. clearly, in either case, the fish need to be fed frequently as richard (polypterus) said.

i also share the curiosity as to where a 1" alligator gar was attained, as well as to its actual species ID. if you could provide a pic we could more effectively help you with its ID and also suggestions for care. it seems unlikely that 1" specimens of alligator gars would be found anywhere at this time of year--

Almost except my fish has stripes running down entire lenth of body, the stripes are kinda white and goldish. The "beak"looks the same. After reading a few of these posts i am now hoping my LFS was incorrect. What do you think??

Don't mean to derail but, I am having second though about the 2 gars that I bought from an lfs. They said that they were alligator gars. They are both 5" at the most. One definitely has a different distinguishable shaped head profile from the side and the other one looks like my 10" florida gar that I have. I will try to take pics tonight and upload. These gar were from Aquascape Online.
