Did you actually see the spawning? I have many "pairs" turn out to be two females. Severums, umbees, discus, and angels have all done this for me.
 
I did see the female lay the eggs several times.But the other Severum(which I'm pretty sure is a male)wants nothing to do with breeding.

you need to pay attention when you're messing around with pH like this. it's very easy to get pH swings and kill the fish. I'd be checking my pH daily.
