Hey there, I have the oppurtunity to grab 2 Red bellies, at 6" and 7", in exchange for a couple mature pairs of convict cichlids, and some of their fry. What do you think? What is the value of these fish? Is it worth it?

From what I know they are eating live and freeze dried foods and are a healthy weight.

To me the trade should only be considered if you actually want the fish and can properly care for their needs. Not because what their monetary value is.

Do you have a 3rd one to put in there? Or are they currently seperated, or a breeding pair?

if no to the above questions, they would need to be seperated, Piranhas need a group to spread the aggression around...otherwise, fatalities will be high.

Other than that, it's up to you if it's a good deal or not. Look around on Aquascapeonline.com and see what the going price is for their fish of the same size, and figure it out from there!!

G/L And welcome to the board!!

I've got an open and cycled 130 gallon right now, that is big enough to comfortably live two piranha and a pleco?

Depending on the demensions of the tank you could have up to 6-7 RBPs in that tank. RBPs are schooling fish and do better in groups. With a pair you can end up with aggression problems.

These are piranha and not pacu, right?

I agree with Bderick.

Either one or 3+. 2 is an awkward/dangerous number to deal with.

Thanks for the help guys! Yes, they are pirahna, and do you find them an interesting fish to keep? Do you have any suggestions for adding a few more to the two, if possible? Or is this better to pass up because there are only two. BTW The tank dimensions are roughly 6 ft by 1.5 ft by 2 ft ish,

Let's put it this way....

I got one RBP, would love to get more RBP but the one I have has an eye problem, and my fiance even wants to get one now!! lol

You'll want to get one or two more piranhas about the same size as to 2 you already have (2 is better than one for aggression issues) remove your fish, rearrange your tank to break up territories, and then put all three/four however many in about the same time.

i wouldn't. you don't seem to know enough about piranhas (in no way am I criticizing you). I would do some serious research, and then decide if I wanted them.

your tank sounds about 125 gals (6x1.5x2) so you could keep up to 5 p's in there for life

i would tank the p's but add acouple more
alos to onion there isnt really anything you need to know (other then feeding and temp) when keeping p's other them general FW info like cycling , testing...

i dont beleive in the 2 # but if you want more i would get them at the same time as the others

dont buy them on their reputation or you will be extreamly dissapointed

if you take the pp's all you will need to do is up the filtration (depending on your current setup)
