is it wrong to feed fish live food

i don't see why it's a bad thing to enjoy the show/entertainment aspect of feeding a fish live food. none of you watch other large predators hunt on tv or youtube? we all have different kinks and interests, most of the short lived but some stick. i don't think we should pass judgement on someone for exploring their interests just because it's different then your's.

yup once you gave them a feeder fish after you trained them to take pellets, they will go back to the live foods and rejecting pellets again. Happens lot to me. I've had some fish died of starvation when trying to get them on prepared foods.

Also some species required live foods for breeding purposes such as Pike Livebearers. They can take flakes but is incapable to produce live fry unless they are introduce to live foods.

No offence rebel but if your not willing to offer live food to a animal that will not take prepared food and your prepared to let it starve to death as a result then maby you shouldn't be keeping the specific species that require live food? Training a fish to take pellets and frozen food is one thing but allowing it to starve to death in my opinion is not keeping the fishes best interests at mind.

To me, seeing a Lion take down and eat a gazelle on a documentary show is natural, they have to eat, they can't wait around in hope that some one is going to come and drop off a box of steaks for them haha but with captive animals its different, they don't need to hunt and kill. (not all of them anyway)

I mean, if certain types of fish need to see a moving prey item to trigger a feeding response and can not be pellet or frozen food trained then I have no problem with that. For me its not so much about people wanting to watch their animal eat a live feeder, each to their own hey, for me its about if its necessary or beneficial to the animal when pellet food is far more nutritious, dose not have the risk or parasites or disease and dose not leave a bloody mess in the tank lol.

Have a good one. Cheers-

A lion eating is natural, your desire to view it is what's being under attack. At least that's how I'm taking some of these posts about entertainment value

Idk about you guys but if your a Hunter, and you deprive another hunter of the hunt, then that just isnt right. Of course pellets are a good option and everyone should feed mostly pellet for a really good diet, but the simple act of depriving a predatory fish of its most natural instinct to me is more an act of abuse then letting the feeders be eaten in a glass box w/ little chance of escaping.

I Hunt, ive hunted since i was a kid. I can honestly say being deprived of hunting would depress me and i doubt its different with predatory fish, seeing as though their life is split into 2 parts, hunting and reproducing. So i breed livebearers for live treats, and ive noticed a marked increase in aggression from my red wolf fish towards his tank mates after a while w/o feeders. Example A, what was left of my heckelli once morning. I use feeders once a week, usually dropping 5 in for all 4 big preds in there. Didnt do it for 3 weeks and i wake up to this.

Maybe you should not be in this hobby if it bothers you that much. Most fishes will starve for awhile if they won't try new types of food. It can be happened to EVERY fish. I've had goldfish that refused to eating flakes but gladly accepted pellets. So if you think that I shouldn't have that specific fish, you are wrong. I will try it again and will either do same method or a new method to get them converted from live foods to prepared foods.

Some people get too emotional these days......

Do you guys think feeding live makes fish more aggressive?

In my experience it can make them a little more. I don't feed live because I'm afraid my managuense would see my firemouth (who he can swallow if he wanted to) as prey

In my experiences, it prevents them to eating other tankmates. If you skipped a mealtime and a tank mate comes up missing and your fish has a big bulge in the stomach.

Honestly it doesn't bother me at all i just think that if your not willing to provide for a animals needs then maby you shouldn't be getting the animal whatsoever. Its the same debate as putting large fish like snakeheads in 30g tanks why do we not do this? because the fish will get stunted from water quality and die a lot earlier than it should. So if we shouldn't care about a fishes eating requirements then maby we shouldn't care about its housing ones either?

Im all for converting predators from live food to pellets but if the fish wont take them then i do think you should revert back to live food before the fish does starve to death. Its one thing trying to convert from live to prepared but not feeding live to a extent of the animal dying as a result of not eating is another.

And im far from emotional lol just pointing out if aquarists dont care for the species then maby we shouldn't care to the extent of spending $$$ on housing :)
