Would you consider it "wrong" to steal an aquatic plant from a river system? Would you change your mind knowing the body of water will freeze over in 2-4 weeks?

not asking, guys is dis legal?
not asking, guys can I has planted tank?

...just wondering what your outlook is on mother nature, I guess.

You could end up with a bunch of parasites or some crazy disease that kills all your fish. In the end mother nature will always have the last laugh.

I was able to find a pretty nice blue crayfish out of the river systems here in a city. Just quarentine for awhile. With plants you may want to dip them in a bleach solution to kill parasites or bacteria. Maybe 10 parts water to 1 part bleach for 2 minutes then rinse and they should be be ok. Ive never tried this and I dont know anybody who has and I am curious as to how it will turn out.
Its usually illegal to go and just remove wildlife, but in most cases nobody could care if your picking a few plants out of the water.

*ahem*

I may or may not have a lot of wild water plants growing all over the place near me. I may or may not enjoy bringing them home in vases and observing them for long periods of time. Some might even suggest that I have found one species of hair algae (I know, not a true plant) extremely useful in nitrate reduction as a result of said above activities which may or may not have taken place.

do it man, who cares just make sure you take precautions to get rid of any potential parasites, i've kept all kinds of natives from bass and catfish and bream to crayfish to turtles to plants frogs tadpoles the list goes on and on, nobody is gonna stop you and like you said the plants will die in a couple weeks you're doing it a favor, take advantage of what's available to you - no hippy logic necessary

Let me tell you a short tell my father told me when I was a young Girl. One day I was down fishing at the pond. I was not catching any thing so I decided to toss some rocks into the pond. Pops saw me doing this and he was pissed. It is kinda a pet pev of his. He asked me what would happen if every one was to throw some rocks in the pond. I said it would eventually be full of rocks. Well the same happens when you take from nature. If every one just took one plant sooner or later there would not be any plants. Just my take.

No, the water would rise. It would not "be full of rocks". Your dad meant well, but i don't think physics was one of his strong points.
