Is Lead Aquarium Safe?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The lead weights are not "safe now" Lead does not "change" once in water for a while. In fact, it continues to leach its' toxins.

I can't imagine it would be a problem. Yes it's toxic, but it's not going to affect the water that quickly. If you're doing regular water changes and don't make the lead a permanent feature then you should be in the clear.

Oh, it would also depend on your water chemistry. I'm majoring in environmental chemistry and one of our problem sets had to do with lead solubility vs pH. If you have a neutral - alkaline pH, lead solubility goes way way down. Doesn't mean it's not in the water, there's just less of it.

Lots of other methods to weight down driftwood..

One I seem to like is a large piece of slate or two, and use a couple airline tubing hoses to tie them to the bottom of the driftwood.

Mr. Guy - agreed - although I never knew that the pH affected how quickly it leaches. Interesting.

And yes, with regular water changes, it won't really have a chance to build up that much. I personally just don't like having "it" there to begin with.

Well pH affects the concentration in soil anyway. I would assume that it would be the same in water, the math would just be a bit different. Same idea, slightly different medium. Good soil's full of water anyway.

few things...

- yes i tried soaking it lol...

- yes i tried tying rocks to it... it brought the rocks off the ground. the ***** just doesn't want to stay down

- any ideas how to boil a 4 ft piece of driftwood I am all ears...

- i like the covering with silicone idea... will probably go with that

Lead stores up in the nervous system tissues and is slow to be removed. Even though there are low levels in the water, over time they slowly increase in the fish. When the lead reaches toxic levels, the fish will slowly die.

does metallic lead disolve in ph 7 freshwater ???

I use slate to weight down my drift wood... Just use a cement bit to drill through it and use stainless steel screw to really screw things all up...
