Is Mayan Cichilds a common fish?

The thing is about some large cichlids (especially mayans in my case, I've raised many of them) it really depends on how they're raised. They're adult aggression levels seem to be determined by their tankmates. If they are at the bottom of the totem pole for too long, they later tend to be more aggressive to their tankmates, especially if their "getting revenge." I've found they have long memories too.

Just my experience... Imo, they're great tankmates for an African cichlid tank when well fed. The mayan has to be larger though, because the Africans are much faster, more aggressive and more nimble. The tank needs to be big, with a lot of hiding places. 120+ imo. Don't worry about water parameters for the mayan, they actually seem to prefer the water Africans like!

They are very common in Mexico (in the wild), but not in the hobby. Most people only want terrors, so they are more common.
I would rather have a Mayan myself.

Same happens here in Guatemala, they are available in the wild but i think I am the only one who keeps them and i have to say that Mayans are really nice fish to keep.
