My father always kept fish which influenced me to do the same.

My grandpa gave me a 10 gallon tank with guppies and the like when I was 5. I've kept fish ever since, as did grandpa up until he passed on. I am now passing it on to my sisters kids, so I say yes it run in the genes.

Definitely doesn't run in the genes. Might seem like that, but it's probably just relatives passing down hobbies.

I say no because that's not how genes work! :D
I agree, but I do think that the majority of fishkeepers get into the hobby because of their parents or other relatives. I got into fishkeeping because of my dad. He and my aunt both kept fish as kids (I have no idea how they got started) and my aunt still does (not at an MFK scale though, I think her tank is about 30 gallons w/ a few goldfish), but my dad quit keeping fish when I was born because he couldn't afford to mantain his 135g saltwater tank.

yup! those of us that got it from someone in our family were socialized to do so.

genes are something different.

When I have kids, they'll grow up around fish and reptiles, hopefully they'll get into it.
