although the micro details of the process are very complicated and still being researched......the application of building bio filters that work is quite easy !!! :headbang2

1) Yes

2) Think of the bacteria as eating the ammonia, it can only eat so fast... so if there is an over-abundence of ammonia more bacteria will grow to 'eat' the ammonia.

DO definately plays a big part in this process.
