Is my 55 overstocked?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
up your water change schedual as the fish start getting bigger, and you might want a little more filtration and it should work.

it will work out but you might eventually one day get something larger like a 75gallon

If I was aloud to buy a larger tank i would no dought, but at the moment i don't have the room nor the space. when i bought my 55g i really wanted a 75 or a 90 but i was restricted to a 55. for now i can't even get a 10g. and for my filtration again i would but i don't have any money to get an eheim.

Sounds like a "wait & see" proposition. If inhabitants start bullying each other you can always remove the problem fish or victims and try something else. As for overcrowding, it doesn't sound like a fish torture chamber to me so Id say go for it and make changes along the way if needed. Already implied, water changes, water changes etc.

I would throw on another AC110 and then do 20% WC weekly. Thats a good strong system that helps to stretch out the 50 gallon while not making it a constant battle.

I second (or third, or fouth) the "add more filtration" opinion. I suggest more water changes than 1 a week. If you do 1 per week, make it 50%, but I favor 2-3 per week at 20-30%.
In my 55 gallon, I have:
1 Senegal bichir (7")
1 Rope fish (10")
1 Endlicheri bichir (5")
1 Delhzi bichir (5")
1 Palmas bichir (4.5")
8 Buenos Aires tetras (2-3")
1 Frontosa chichlid (2.5")
2 Bristlenose plecs (4")
1 Clown plec (3")

I run a fluval 203 on it and a penguin 550 powerhead. It is heavily planted. I do water changes 2-3 times per week, 20-30% at a time, and my nitrates stay at 5-10ppm.
