Hello first post/topic.

I got two convicts yesterday an they seem to be fine until last night when the male started rubbing on things in the tank, now he just sitting in the corner with every little swiming.

He aslo looks to be turning a darker color... almost purple?

The female seems fine, she swims, moves pebbles, nips at the patsy etc.

I have quick - dip test strips an the water seems to be fine, I know now those arent very good and will buy a better test kit soon.

The temp is around 78-80oF and there is a sponge filter and H.O.B with biowheel, afew plants (Fake) an a clay pot.

Again all the other fish seem ok... the male ehh not so much :x

Thanks. (Getting ready for 4th of july party -_-... will try to respond to suggestions/help)

Nothing that my untrained eye can see... just purple an hardly moving.

He did nip at the female when she nugged him... if that means anything?

Small update:

Twice now ive seen him swim up an down in the tank, even did a few spins at the top... but when he notices me he just sinks like a rock.

The female on the other hand is swiming around looking happy.

what size is the tank? and was he rubbing on things sideways like he had an itch or was he rubbing his privates on the stuff. kind of sounds like hes guarding some eggs or something if he is just staying in that spot, what else is in the tank with them?

its a 20gallon long and I got around 16gallons of water at the LFS and bought the fish 24hrs later. (Guy said they should be fine)

The male was rubbing his side.. like an itch.

And aside from the two convicts that are about 1-1.5' there are 6 super small patys or whatever they are called.

ok yeah its probably ammonia burns or something, water really barely holds any beneficial bacteria and water from the fish store would contain more bad things than good, i would go out and get some CYCLE and add it to the tank ASAP as your bio media has like no bacteria on it at the moment to get rid of the ammonia and nitrites

^2nd that. It sounded like an ammonia spike. Id do a 40% water change right now. and keep an eye on the ammonia until your beneficial bacteria can handle the bioload.
It could also be some disease from that nasty pet store water. Chances are your tank water is just unstable right now.

The water from the LFS is stuff he filters then puts R/O right in... not just water out of a tank, at least that is what I understood him to say :grinno:

And is cycle like Prime or any of that instant bacteria in a bottle?

Thanks.
