Is My Dad Right?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tell your dad that every time he flushes the toilet he uses 2-3 gallons of water.

And since water is such a problem that maybe all of the males in the house hold can go outside to urinate. And that would save alot of water.

Also like allready mentioned look up the cost of water in your city on the internet. I would be willing to bet that 50g is less than 25 cents.

just as an example, I grabbed my water bill, and I pay $1.68 per cubic meter of water consumed.

one cubic meter = 1000L = 3780 gallons.

so, $1.68/3780g = $0.0004 per gallon

so, in terms of consumption charges, 50g would cost:

$0.02 or 2 cents.

now, there are services charges and stuff that are about equal, so its really more like 4 cents per 50g.

x 4 per month = 16 cents

x 12 months =$1.92 per year to change 50g per week. (here in Ontario canada)

water changes are nothing unless you live in an area where water is at a premium. and even then, say the price is 10x this amount, thats still only $20 to do a whole year of weekly water changes on the tank.

its all the baths, showers, dishwashers, toilet flushes etc etc that make up most of the consumption charges.

hope this helps you with your decision.

duh. I just realized that my math is totally wrong LOL:screwy:

lets revise this.

1 cubic meter of water is 1000 liters = 265 gallons (approximately).

so, $1.68 per 265g = $0.006 per gallon

*50 gallons = 31 cents consumption charger per water change, or 62 cents for the total bill with all the service charges and stuff.

so, that would mean it would cost $32 per year to do a 50g water change each week in my area.

sorry about that.

i do 50%/ week 2x50% on my big tanks

if its a cost factor offer to help with the water bill.

in terms of showing your dad where you read this thing about 50% wc ask him if he would let you show him some things on the net and google it to find the results

but most of all offer to help with the water bill per month if its a cost factor

If everything is stable with you current schedule then there is nothing to worry about

I used to do 1/3 water change once every 2-3 weeks. Then when I got the 75 I started to do it every once a week, all my fish in the previous tanks have brighter colors and are more active.

I think that I will get a nitrate test kit, and look at the water bill with my dad.

I don't do water changes too frequantly... that's cause I have plants that sucks the nitrates up...
