Is my fish real Red Terror??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well, it depends. what size tank? 4 feet could be a lot of sizes, from 55 to 150. But TBH it isn't suitable for a male festae unless it's over 100 gallons. Males can easily reach 14 inches.

I have ATM a 209 ltr tank. So will my Terror out grow my tank or are you saying it won't reach its full length in my tank?

Cheers

I think a 55 gallon is not large enough to house a Festae for life. Well, you could But why subject an animal to cramped conditions. Its the width of the tank more so the length.
If your fish does make it to its full potential it will be as long as your tank is wide.

Imagine keeping a Dog in crate just big enough for it to turn around and thats all. Most people wouldn't do that to a dog, but they will with fish, I just dont understand that.

I'm on the same page as you In 3 months I'll be upgrading to a wider tank But I thought the fish only grows to size of tank?? But yeah I rather see my fish reach its full length

Glad to hear you have a plan.

This is a myth. If your fish seems like it only grows to the size of the small tank its been kept in, Its because the animal is stunted and is overall not in good health.

Some will say, yeah but my fish eat and seem fine. It may seem so but I assure you that oscar or jack dempsey that is only 5 or 6 inches and has been kept in a 20 gallon tank for years would have been a 12 or 14 inch monster in the same amount of time under the proper conditions.
This is where that myth comes from that fish didnt grow to fit the aquarium, It has only "survived" in poor conditions. It did not thrive.

+1 to this. But I want to take second and focus on the "Stunting".

So apparently some fish (maybe all fish?) produce a hormone that is released into the water that can slow growth.

Smaller tanks = less water volume (obviously) so it's much easier for these hormones to build up and affect growth.

So while it may actually be the case that this stunting can limit a fishes growth, thereby satisfying the myth that a fish only grows to its tank, its important to understand that this is not a good thing to do to your fish.

In South Florida on vacation and catching Mayans like I usually do - I swear no one would complain if they could get Aquarium ones to look like ones freshly caught - makes you wonder how good Festae look when just pulled from a lake
