Is my grow-out to small?

I agree with DJRansome DJRansome when stocking new fish, I prefer to introduce juveniles. It seems that the established members don't perceive the smaller fish as threats. The typical three day, new fish cichlid slap down isn't so severe.

To tell you the truth, given the 2 options, I would just put the 1.5" fish in with the adults.
I’m sure my 8in Borley would try to eat them.
I’d like them to develop some male traits and net out females. Probably when they reach 2.5 - 3in I will put them in.
One of them is already slightly bigger and looks like male, could this one guy make other males subdominant at so young age??

Then I would get them a 30" or even a 48" tank.

Just a quick question:

I used ornament which lay down in my shed for long time and had lots of dried algae on it. I give it a scrub today but it was hard to get it off from ditches. Anyone know if this could be potentially danger to fish?

Hard to say, usually a tooth brush will remove leftover stuff off ornaments.

You didn't store it in the shed with gasoline or other chemicals did you?
