Is my stingray eating?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He does look a little weathered. Would you mind sharing your tank parameters

PH
Ammonia
Nitirite
Nitrate
Temprature

How long have you had the ray?

Is he wild or captive born?

You should try chopped up earthworms for food instead of bloodworms they are much more filling and it is easier to monitor how much is being eaten

Wen i heard about a ray i immediately started researching them. I found out that it is good to start them off with live food like blackworms. They go gaga for those. Try that and maybe some fresh fish. Either that or the ray just does not like the food. Go to a site called http://www.zoid.us/motoro.htm. This guy shows u how to break it down in the tank from order, then feed, then good food suggestions. He is great.

Also that is waaaaaay to small of a tank. U need atleast a 200 gallon tank. Good if u have a 300 tho. That looks like wat 10 gallons?

Alright here are some other pictures. pH level of my water would be 7, nitrates, nitrites, chlorine are not measured but have been controlled by a liquid that the LFS uses before i bought it. I have also added a liquid that boosts the healthy bacteria in the tank as recommeded too. I know the tank i've got is small but in singapore we dont have huge spaces like those in US and all to buy huge tanks and all :( and when i got my ray from the LFS, it was in a much smaller tank with 3 other rays and other fishes so i hope this would be a better environment for him. anyway, from the pictures u can see that i've been trying to feed it some fishes, blood worms and prawn. so far, the ray would move away whenever i feed it the worms and prawn but its different for the fish cos it will actually suck the fish till its underneath and starts munching. however, i realise he is only nimbling and not swallowing it whole. is this normal? it will jerk up and down quite vigorously while nimbling and after a few what i see as attempts, he willstop. is the fish too big for him, even though i cut it into half? mine ray is still rather small, the size of the bottom of one's palm to the tip of the middle finger. i left the bits of prawns and fish overnight in the tank and this morning i woke up and all was gone. possible that he has eaten them? and do rays tend to feed at night, like late in the wee hours when no one is watching? im just really worried that its not eating :( oh and from the first picture, u guys would notice that one of its eyes is injured. noooo i didnt poke it, it was alrdy like this when i bought it. i know some of u will scold me and say one of the rule of getting a stingray was to check its condition and all first. this injury was overlooked by me when buying the ray, i got it instead of the rest cos i was hoping to help it recover if possible. do u think this is a serious injury? there will be some kind of milky mucus-like substance appearing and coming out of that eye from time to time. any advice? would salt work? im sorry i asked so much, am just really worried and i know im a lousy owner but please lend some experience and advice to me. thanks :(

thanks for the information man. i will look into a bigger tank asap!

Get a liquid test kit as soon as possible. Rays can be very sensitive to water conditions and you need to monitor them to keep them alive and well.

Keeping the water as clean as possible will help the eye heal.

Rays will eat in the dark easier than the light some times

What is your water change schedule as of right now?

alright, any idea how much would a liquid kit cost and is it available at LFS?

hmm.. do you think you're able to tell what kinda injury is that? his eye seems red. will adding salt help or i shld just leave it?

Ok, noted. Will try to create a darker atmosphere for him. :)

From the threads i have been reading, I actually decided on doing water changes once a week but somehow the water gets milky pretty quickly so i have been doing 50% change for the past 2 days, daily. Might be the food that made it dirty? I left bloodworms in there. And after every water change i do add the chemical solution as mentioned above. Am i doing it wrong?

Thanks for ur advice!
