Is my TEX in breeding colors?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IMHO:

I have had Texas look that black only when HE went looking for someone to love  ...... He did that all the time with my female Salvini.

I wish that pairing could have survived,

But it could also be a agression thing as I have a pair that one goes black like that (not as drastic), had to separate the pair.

Again, I belive it may be out on the prowl. Now when I say he, that was my experience, nothing exact to back it up, except that I knew the salvini I had was female for a fact.

Hell, I even referenced your post from 11/17/06

" Anyone got pix of baby Texas? Growth rates?? "

some good info there as well... (although incomplete)

Sorry I could not be more exact. But I have learned here, don't post what you have not experienced. The flame(s) can get hot! :WHOA:

:nilly:

Oh I also think (again IMHO)it is a female.

Dovii88, Sweet Pic's, are those yours? That pair is freaking sweeeeeeeeeeeet!

Sometimes I think that too but I also think it might be a male. He shows some signs, unless females carry these traits also.

1. When I got him at petsmart, he was the biggest out of the batch, pestering the other smaller texas'.

2. I hear the bigger growers from a batch are males.

3. Males are or tend to be more aggressive, this texas beats the **** out of the jag time to time or at least tries to.I can turn around right now to see my texas and he'll probably be chasing the jag in 1-2 second spurts at a time.

4. They mentioned a black blotch/spot on the dorsal fin which indicates if there is, its a female. Mine doesn't have one so does that make it a male 100%?.

5. Venting. I looked at him real close and I can anytime because he never backs away and is always right there in my face looking at me. Anyways I see the genitalia part sticking out, and i'm not sure if its female(blunt and round at the tip) or male(pointy tip), since I have never had both a female and male cichlid to compare it to. All I know is it's pointed backwards. Are males pointed frontwards?

One more question, what does it mean when my Tex scratches himself on the driftwood and sand? I hear its called flashing, something cichlids do? Or is it ich? Should I dose for ich anyway just to be safe or make sure first that it is indeed ich first?

Hi jesterx626,
I have a pair of texas and my female has a black spot on the dorsal and my male doesn`t have it. I`m sure that this fact is true, because i have another texas(2,5 inches) and this one has a black spot on the dorsal and is a female too. So IMO if your texas doesn`t have a black spot on the dorsal, it`s probably a male.
Best Regards, Carlos.

yeah im leaning towards female...

nice pic..man i had one but he kicked the bucket..well actually the salvini kicked his aaiiss

yeah, the first one i had got his ass kicked too. BUUUUUUUUT, he was stressed out. it wasnt fair. got tag teamed by my 2 red devils and Gutt. HAHA! R.I.P ;)

The Dorsal Fin spotting seems to be a the most popular vote, venting is difficult, I gave up on that years ago, I have been lucky in that I have had my Texas breed with a female con, so I know he is not only a Male,

But a real horny bastard!
