Is P. Lapradei a subspecies of P. Bichir Bichir

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I believe they share the same genus and species, but are different subspecies.

genus: Polypterus
species: bichir
subspecies: lapradei / bichir

O

it would be listed as
species
P.bichir bichir
subspecies
P.bichir lapradei

Same Genus, same species, different subspecies ;)

Good to see someone knows a little about Latin nomenclature, I can't believe how many people on this site miss-use the word "species".....

So you're saying P. bichir bichir isn't really an actual subspecies, and the second "bichir" is just added so people don't confuse it with P. bichir lapradei. IE It should really just be called P. bichir (not P. bichir bichir)?

It was actually called Polypterus bichir when they first discovered polypterus as Polypterus bichir bichir was the first species to be discovered. They later found another bichir that look similar so they called polypterus bichir as polypterus bichir bichir so it won't confused with the sub-species polypterus bichir lapredei.
