Is Prime ray safe.

i will try the plant method. are water hyacinths a good plant to use in the aquarium? what are some floating low light plants?

I am confused, if the problem is nitrates, then you need either PLANTS (how about some floating plants?) or water changes. Not Prime.

I use prime in my tanks... have been for a long time. Seems to be perfectly fine with me ray, no problems.

ALso, you mention you don't understand why your nitrates are high because you have a lot of filtration... but you understand don't you that your filtration does not really remove nitrates (maybe a little). 2 things remove nitrates... WATER CHANGES and PLANTS.

You are barking up the wrong tree.

Not really barking up the wrong tree. I am doing water changes every other day to keep them low and the filters alone don't take care of the nitrates but the bateria in the filters do.

The rays produce waste which turns into ammonia, the ammonia gets turned into nitrites and then into nitrates, then the benifical bacteria (arobic and anarobic) in the filters or plants get rid of the nitrates. But my nitrates are not disapearing. Maybe I did something to kill the colonys of bacteria in my filters but I don't know what.

So I was just curious if prime was safe to remove it temporarily until I figure out why it isn't diapearing on its own, thats all. Sorry if my first post is confusing.

ah got it.... hmm... I do water changes (50%) eery other day and no problem with Nitrates. Must be conicidental. I don't think the prime is causing the high nitrates... unless it is somehow converting nitrites / ammonia to nitrates (like bacteria does). So strange.


PLANTS:: come on plant gols, suggestions? IME, hyacinth requires a lot of light. But ANACHARIS has always done very well in my low light tanks, is fast growing so should absorb a ot of nutrients, and its cheap

No thats not what I mean, I have never used it with water changes or ever in my ray tanks (prime). I am just curious if I can use it until I can figure out why my nitrates won't diapear, thats all.

Prime will help take care of the nitrates in my tank, I wouldn't have a problem with nitrates if I was using it but want to know it is ray safe before I use it.

prime only works on chlorine,chloramine and ammonia. it doesnt say anything about nitrates. althought it says if you use 5 times the normal dose for emergency NITRITE removal but nothing about nitrates

It detoxifies it and help out the filters, by helping bacteria in the filters. Read the side label.

The biggest thing I need to know is if it is ray safe. That will be the biggest help.

it IS RAY SAFE, but as the other guy said probably won't help with your nitrate. Tough problem. But good luck with it.. wish we were more help.

Maybe we have different labels on our bottles. Mine says Remove chlorine, chloramine, ammonia. Detoxifies nitrite & nitrate, provides slime coat.

Then on the side label it explains it.
